Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 September 2026
Azwaj is an Islamic matrimony app that helps practising Muslims and their families find a spouse in a respectful, halal way. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By creating an account or using Azwaj, you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
We collect only what we need to run a matrimony service:
- Account: your phone number, verified through Firebase Phone Authentication (a Google service). Your phone number is how you sign in.
- Profile: the details you enter: name, gender, date of birth, marital status, country and city, nationality, sect/maslak, education, profession, height, languages, a short "about you", and your partner preferences.
- Family / Wali contact: if you choose to add it, so a matched person can reach your family the proper way. It is shown only as described in Section 3.
- Photos: pictures you upload. Photos are blurred by default and are shown to another member only after you approve their photo request.
- Verification selfie: if you request the verified badge, a live selfie you submit. It is used only to confirm you are a real person, reviewed by our team, and is not shown on your public profile.
- Activity: connect requests, matches, Sparkles, profiles you view or pass, and any reports or blocks you make, so the service works and stays safe.
- Device & technical: app version, a notification token so we can send you push alerts, basic log data, and an approximate region derived from your nationality (used for regional pricing).
- Purchases: if you buy Premium or Sparkles, the payment is processed by Google Play (purchases made inside the Android app) or Razorpay (purchases made on our website). We receive confirmation of the payment, the payment method type, and your plan status. We never receive or store your card, UPI or bank details. For website purchases we also record the state you select, which Indian tax rules require us to collect before the purchase.
- Partner referrals: Azwaj has a partner programme, and some people arrive through a partner’s link or a personal invitation from one. If you do, we store that partner’s code on your account, along with how it reached us: whether it came with your first sign-in or later, and whether the request looked like the app or a web browser. We keep it so the partner can be paid their commission on any purchase you later make. It is set once, on the day your account is created, and never changed afterwards. It says nothing about you beyond which link you followed.
- Website analytics: our public website (azwaj.io) uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people find useful. It sets a cookie holding a random identifier and records pages viewed, approximate location from your IP address, and general device and browser information. It tells us how many people read a page, never who they are, and it is not used inside the app or the member area, and never to build an advertising profile of you. To opt out, use your browser's cookie controls or Google's opt-out add-on.
2. What we do not collect or do
- We do not ask for or store caste or biradari, ever.
- We do not have open chat; contact happens through consent-based connect requests only.
- We do not sell your personal information to anyone.
- We do not show third-party advertising inside Azwaj, and we do not build advertising profiles of you. Optional updates about Azwaj itself are sent only with your permission (see notifications).
3. How your information is shared
- With other members: your profile is visible to other members in line with your settings. Your photos are shown only after you grant a photo request. Your family/Wali contact is shown only to a Premium member you have mutually matched with, never to the general membership.
- Service providers who work for us: Google Firebase (sign-in, photo storage, push notifications), MongoDB Atlas (database hosting), Render (server hosting), Google Play and Razorpay (payments), Google Analytics (website visit statistics only), and a scheduling service that runs routine maintenance jobs. They process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy terms.
- With a partner who referred you: a partner never sees your profile, your name, your phone number or your activity through the partner programme. They see a count of how many people joined through their code, and what they have earned. The one exception is an invitation they sent you themselves: because they typed your number to send it, their dashboard shows that invitation, the name they wrote for you, the last four digits they entered, and whether it was opened and accepted. If you delete your account, we remove your number, that name and the link to you from that invitation.
- Safety and law: we may share information if required by law, or to investigate abuse and protect the safety of our members.
4. How we use your information
To create and operate your profile; to suggest matches; to show or hide your photos and contact details according to your consent; to verify identity and keep the community safe; to process purchases; to provide support; to prevent fraud and abuse; and to meet our legal obligations.
Notifications
We send two different kinds of notice, and you control them separately in the app under Profile, then Notifications.
- Service notices tell you about something that has happened on your own account: a request has arrived, one of yours was accepted, a photo request was asked or answered, your verification result, a reminder about a request that is waiting for your reply, a receipt, and important account or safety changes. Verification, safety and account notices cannot be switched off, because they are part of the service you asked for.
- Optional updates are anything else, such as a weekly note that new profiles have joined, or news about Azwaj. These are off unless you switch them on, and you can switch them off again at any time in the same place, in one tap.
To send a notice we use a notification token for your device, your time zone, and whether you opened a notice. A notice never shows another member's name or photo on your lock screen, and you can choose to hide notices entirely until your phone is unlocked. Nothing is sent late at night or during Jumu'ah prayers; anything that happens then is delivered afterwards, and only if it is still true by then.
We do not call you, send you an SMS, or message you on WhatsApp for marketing unless you have separately asked us to.
5. Keeping your information, and deleting it
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time:
- In the app: My Profile → “Delete my account”.
- On the web: using our account deletion request form, useful if you no longer have the app installed.
Deletion is permanent. It removes your profile, your connect requests, your photo grants, the photos you uploaded, and your sign-in. Some limited records may be kept where we are required or permitted to:
- Safety reports made about you may be retained as evidence to protect other members.
- Minimal records may be kept to meet legal, security, or fraud-prevention obligations.
- Reports you filed about others are kept for safety but are de-identified from you.
6. The free biodata maker
Anyone can make a marriage biodata at azwaj.io/biodata-maker without an account. It asks for no photograph and offers no upload.
When you press create, we save a copy of the details you typed, including the contact name and phone number if you chose to add them, along with the design you picked, the country your device connected from, and the date. We keep this copy indefinitely, so that we can keep improving the tool and so that we can help you if you ever write to us about a biodata you made.
We will never call you, message you, or add you to any list because you used this tool. Your details are not sold, and they are not shared with anyone outside Azwaj. If you would like your copy removed, email support@azwaj.io with the name on the biodata and we will delete it.
7. The Rishta Card
A Rishta Card is a one page biodata that a family buys and publishes at its own link. This section describes it because it handles data differently from the rest of Azwaj, and because some of that data is about people other than the buyer.
What a card holds. The details the family typed, the mobile number they verified by OTP, and up to four photographs if they chose to add any. The card carries no phone number on its face: not the family's, not the wali's.
Photographs. They are stored in Google Firebase Storage in the asia-south1 region, in India. They are never served to a visitor from a Storage address. Every photograph goes out through our own proxy, resized and watermarked, so that no link exists that would keep working after the family took the card back. A card's photographs sit behind a second PIN, separate from the one that opens the biodata.
The two PINs. The family chooses who receives them. Changing either one immediately signs out every device that ever entered the old one. We must be plain about the limit: anyone who has been past a PIN can take a screenshot, and no change we make can reach a copy that has already been taken.
People who say they are interested. A visitor may leave a name, a phone number and a short note for the family. Those details go to that card's owner and to nobody else. They are kept while the card is live and for up to 30 days after it closes, then deleted. They are never used for marketing, never sold, and never exported in bulk. To have yours removed, email support@azwaj.io with the last few digits of the number you left.
Counting who opened it. The owner sees how many times the card was opened and roughly how many separate visitors there were. That second number is worked out from a one way hash of the network address and the browser, so it is an estimate and not a headcount. We do not show the owner any name, any device, or any location, and we do not keep a list of who opened the card.
How long it all lasts. A card runs for its paid term, then keeps its data for 30 more days so that renewing brings the same card back. After those 30 days an automatic sweep deletes the photographs from storage, the interested families' details, the view records and the card itself. Deleting your Azwaj account also deletes every card you own.
Taking a card down. Anyone can ask for a card to be removed at azwaj.io/c/remove, including the person the card is about, and they do not need the PIN or the account. We confirm by a short phone check that the request is genuine, then take it down everywhere at once.
8. Security
We protect your information with encryption in transit, access controls, and consent-gated photo sharing. No online service can be completely secure, but we work to safeguard your data and to fix issues quickly.
9. Children
Azwaj is intended only for adults aged 18 and above. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor is using Azwaj, please contact us and we will remove the account.
10. Your choices and rights
You can view and edit most of your information directly in the app, and you can delete your account as described above. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, or request a copy of your data. To make a request, contact us using the details below.
11. International users
Azwaj serves Muslims across the subcontinent and the diaspora. Profile and card data, including photographs, is stored in India: our database is hosted with MongoDB Atlas and our files with Google Firebase Storage in the asia-south1 region. Sign in, payments and analytics are handled by Google Firebase, Razorpay and Google Analytics, which may process data outside your country. By using Azwaj you consent to this processing wherever those providers operate.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
