The Full Azwaj Guide

Everything about how Azwaj works, for you and for the family reading over your shoulder.

Azwaj is an Islamic matrimony service for adults (18+) seeking marriage. It is not a dating app: there is no open chat, photos are private by default, and families are part of the process by design.

Getting started

Sign-up takes a phone number and a one-time SMS code. No passwords to remember. You can create a profile:

Azwaj never asks for caste or biradari: not at sign-up, not anywhere. That is a permanent decision, not a setting.

Your profile

The profile is a guided set of questions (deen, education, work, family, lifestyle, and what you are looking for) designed so a family can judge compatibility the way they actually do: seriously, and on the things that matter.

Finding matches

The Matches tab shows profiles that fit your preferences: one at a time on your phone, or as a grid you can scan. On a computer, Azwaj becomes a full desktop experience with a sidebar and a three-column grid.

Filters let you narrow by age, location, sect, practising level, education, and more. Some advanced filters are part of the paid plans.

Expressing interest

Why is there no chat? Deliberately. Azwaj moves a match toward a real conversation between families, not months of anonymous texting. Interest → acceptance → family contact, in that order.

Photo privacy: how it actually works

This is the part parents ask about first, so here it is plainly:

  1. Sisters' photos are locked by default. Other members see only a soft-focus, unrecognisable preview, and that blurred version is all our servers ever send them. The clear photo physically does not reach their device.
  2. Seeing a photo requires permission. A member taps "Request Photo Access" and the owner (or their family) grants or declines. Declining is silent, with no awkwardness.
  3. Permission is reversible. Access can be revoked at any time from the Photos tab, and there is a setting to hide photos from everyone entirely.

Family & Wali contact

A profile can carry a family/Wali contact, the proper next step after two families decide to talk. It is shown only to a member who has mutually matched with you and holds a Premium plan. It is never visible to the general membership, and the rule is enforced on our servers, not just in the app.

Verification badge

Members can verify they are a real person by submitting a live selfie, which our team reviews by hand. Verified profiles carry a badge. The selfie is used only for the review. It never appears on the profile.

Biodata & QR sharing

Azwaj can generate a clean, printable biodata from your profile, the format families actually exchange. Each biodata carries a QR code that opens your Azwaj profile. The QR is a safe door: whoever scans it still faces the same photo and contact rules as everyone else. There is also a free Biodata Maker on our website at azwaj.io/biodata-maker, and you can open it here.

New to writing one? Our guide on how to write a marriage biodata walks through it section by section.

Worth reading first

Two pieces that answer the questions most families ask before they start: is using a matrimony app halal, and involving your Wali.

On your phone and your computer

Azwaj runs fully in the browser at app.azwaj.io, on your phone and as a complete desktop experience on a computer, which many parents find easier to read and type on. The Android app is on Google Play.
